Preparing your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or utility vehicle (UTV) for winter storage helps protect it and makes it easier for you to get your off-road vehicle back on the trails when you’re ready. Remember to check your owner’s manual for ATV or UTV storage tips specific to your vehicle.
Before You Winterize ATVs or UTVs
- Decide where you’ll store your ATV or UTV- a garage, storage shed, or other location.
- Determine how much you are willing to spend on ATV or UTV storage.
- Think about if you want to ride during the winter season or keep your ATV or UTV stored full time.
Prepping for Winter ATV Storage
- Contact your insurance agent to discuss whether your current policy includes coverage for off-road or recreational vehicle use.
- Make any necessary repairs such as new brakes, tires, or other maintenance.
- Clean your ATV or UTV to help prevent corrosion.
- Change the oil and filter, then run the engine for a short period to circulate the clean oil.
- Clean or replace the air filter.
- Clean, adjust, and lubricate the chain, if needed.
- Clean and lubricate all control cables and pedals.
- Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
- Remove the spark plugs and pour a tablespoon of engine oil into the cylinders, then crank the engine over to coat them.
- Inflate tires to correct air pressure and, if recommended, raise the ATV or UTV so the tires are off the ground.
- Cover the exhaust opening to prevent critters from taking up residence.
- Cover your ATV or UTV with a breathable cloth.
